“Emma is a Kurdish word that means “we”. The name of our organisation defines us as it is our principle to work together as one team and from different backgrounds and beliefs. It includes everyone.

Emma organization was established in 2013 by a group of women activists and experts in various fields including gender equality, law, education, health and mental health. Emma Organization was established for human development.

We are a non-profit organization providing rehabilitation, development assistance, and programme services to women and vulnerable communities in Kurdistan. The organization coordinates and cooperates with governmental, institutions, networks and groups working in the same field to ensure sustainability.

Vision: A peaceful, secure, developed, and modern Kurdistan and a society that guarantees the full and equal participation of women.

Mission

  • Combat gender-based violence.

  • Eliminate all kinds of discrimination against women.

  • Empower women, displaced women and vulnerable groups.

  • Participation of women in decision-making and peace building.

  • Rehabilitation of Yazidis and other minority survivors from ISIS.

  • Mainstreaming the international convention and resolution principles into national laws and policies.

  • Integration of gender equality in the education system.

  • Eradicate FGM in Kurdistan.

Equal role in peace building, decision-making, reconciliation and state building (in coordination with Women Leaders for Peace Group).

Women Empowerment

Develop women’s abilities and capacity to overcome challenges facing them in their daily lives and effectively involve women in society. Emma Organization currently has community centers in Erbil and Dohuk, that teaches literacy, handcraft, sewing, raising awareness campaigns, rehabilitation and trauma healing of ISIS survivors.

Rehabilitation of ISIS Victims

Emma started to help the displaced population in August 2014, with a specific focus on the Yazidi women, who have been targeted by ISIS and subjected to abduction, torture, rape and sexual slavery.

Our programs provide support to individuals and families to help them heal and rebuild their lives, our organization provides the following:

  • psycho-Social Services;

  • life Skills and Classes;

  • livelihood training; and

  • social activities for children and adults.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

“Don’t disturb my Body” is a project for eradication of FGM in Kurdistan in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the High Council of Women Affairs which is funded by UN women. It involves raising awareness and informing parents of new born girls of the harmful effects of FGM, legal punishments and psychosocial problems girls face as a result of FGM.

The operational work started in October 2014 in four health centers, and is now extended to ten other health centers in Erbil.

Gender Equality within the Education System

We coordinate with relevant institutions and groups to mainstream gender equality principles in the education sector, by promoting women’s participation in decision-making positions within the education ministries and transforming the stereotypical images portrayed on women.”
